TO DIY OR NOT TO DIY, THAT IS THE QUESTION

Fence Construction

Are you considering DIY for your fencing project? Before you move forward, consider a few important facts.

Putting up any kind of fence requires a specific set of skills– do you have them? It takes real skills to put up a fence that will last. No matter what materials you are using, achieving square, plum, and adequate structural strength that lasts requires experience.

The good news is, DuraBond’s Private Steel Fencing is relatively easy to install…if you have the tools, skills, and enough physical strength and stamina needed to get the job done correctly.

Here are a few things to consider when DIY-ing any kind of fence…

Do you have experience?

Do you have experience with tools such as a hammer? Circular saw? Level? Speed square? Measuring tape? Is your experience sufficient that you are safe, and skilled in using these tools? Have you used a laser to ensure posts, etc. are level? Or, alternatively, a string line?

How about concrete – are you strong enough to repeatedly pack 60-80 pounds across your yard? Can you dig a hole straight down 2’ deep? If your answer is “…I think so…”, then you could be in for pain and even injury. Not worth it!

Can you do all these things and more…and will your fence, at the end of the day, be that perfect fence you are looking for? After all, bad fences do not increase the value of your property – they just look shoddy and fall apart all too quickly.

Forgetting to do things causes problems.

Forgetting to call before you dig can result in broken water lines, punctured sewer lines (not good!), or worst: an unfortunate meeting with a big jolt of electricity.

Forgetting to read local codes and restrictions can cause all kinds of problems. You may, for example, build your fence too high, or place the “good side” of your fence on the wrong side, or you may even build your fence out of materials not allowed by your neighborhood…all these mistakes could mean you would have to remove your fence and start all over. Forgetting is awfully expensive!

Ignoring slopes on your land will give you fits when you install your fence. Installing a fence on land that undulates up and down is, in plain talk, difficult. Do you have a plan on how you will do this before you buy materials? Will you step your fence, or rake it? Are you familiar with these terms, and can you manage to properly employ one or the other?

Are you the DIY-er that is installing their fence just to save money?

If you answered yes, then you may be that DIY-er that also buys materials on the cheap. By doing so, you risk your fence becoming essentially worthless in a short time. You won’t get what you paid for!

If these considerations are new to you, if they are not knowledge, you already possess, we recommend you contact a fencing contractor, whose workmanship and professionalism will ensure you get the VALUE in the fence you are looking for!
