The white picket fence has a place in our American story as a symbol of our shared dream of owning a home. The classic saying goes something like this: “I want to own a nice home with a two-car garage, nice cars, and a white picket fence.” This version may differ from the one you have heard, but the point here is fencing symbolizes, in essence, the American Dream.
When I first started in this business, I did not realize how big-time fencing really is. Symbolizing the American Dream is top-shelf stuff, right?
That isn’t the whole story. Fencing is everywhere, really. We just must pay attention – and I don’t mean that we see fences everywhere – sure, we do, but what I mean is that fencing has wormed its way into our national consciousness. And since this is our blog, we will call it the National Consciousness, which seems to elevate fencing a little more.
Let me give you a few examples to show just how important fences have become.
Take the old saying “swing for the fences”. We use this saying to wish others success, to encourage someone to set high goals, to go as far as they can go in whatever it is they are about to do. But when we pay closer attention, we realize” swing for the fences” is straight out of baseball. Baseball is considered by many to be our National Pastime, and the best thing you can do to help your team in baseball is hit a home run. Over the fence.
Consider this old chestnut: “Good fences make good neighbors.” Well, debatable. But let’s look closer again. This saying implies that fences have some mystical power and that by getting a good fence, our neighbors will become good. Wow, that’s fence respect. It is also a myth. Fences cannot make people good, but some people apparently believe they can – just more evidence that fences are in our consciousness – deep down in there.
One more example before we let you go. Think about the saying “mend your fences”. It isn’t, of course about fence maintenance. It is about our relationships with friends and loved ones. When we suggest to others that they should “mend their fences”, we are telling them it is time to repair a damaged relationship. There are the fences again, right in the middle of our friendships, our families. Mending fences can even be used as a verb because fence-mending is now a thing. There is fencing influencing the English language. Impressive.
So fences are pretty darn important to us – that is clear. So if it’s time to get your first fence, or time to replace an old worn-out fence, then, to borrow another saying, it’s time to get off your duff and get one.
